২০০১ সালে জাতীয় নির্বাচন পরবর্তী সহিংসতার জের ধরে সিরাজগঞ্জের উল্লাপাড়ায় সংঘটিত চাঞ্চল্যকর পূর্ণিমা রাণী শীল গণধর্ষণ মামলার যাবজ্জীবন সাজাপ্রাপ্ত পলাতক আসামি ইয়াছিন আলী (৬০) কে গ্রেপ্তার করেছে উল্লাপাড়া মডেল থানা পুলিশ। মঙ্গলবার ঢাকার আশুলিয়া থানাধীন চারাবাগ এলাকা থেকে তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। ইয়াছিন উল্লাপাড়া উপজেলার পূর্বদেলুয়া গ্রামের নিদান আলীর ছেলে। উল্লাপাড়া সার্কেলের সিনিয়র সহকারি পুলিশ সুপার অমৃত সুত্রধর বুধবার সকালে গণমাধ্যমকর্মীদের কাছে এক প্রেস ব্রিফিংয়ে বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করে বলেন, ২০০১ সালের ৮ অক্টোবর সন্ধ্যায় সিরাজগঞ্জের উল্লাপাড়ায় জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন পরবর্তী সহিংসতা জের ধরে অষ্টম শ্রেণি পড়ুয়া ছাত্রী পূর্ণিমা রাণী শীলের বাড়িতে হামলা চালায় কতিপয় আসামি। ভিকটিম ও তার মা-বাবা-ভাইকে বেধড়ক মারপিট করে ভাঙচুর ও লুটপাট চালায়। পরে ভিকটিম পূর্ণিমা রাণী শীলকে জোর করে ধরে নিয়ে একটি কচুক্ষেতে ফেলে গণধর্ষণ করে। এ ঘটনায় ভিকটিমের বাবা অনিল চন্দ্র বাদী হয়ে ১৬ জনকে আসামি করে উল্লাপাড়া মডেল থানায় একটি গণধর্ষণ মামলা দায়ের করে। উক্ত মামলায় বিজ্ঞ বিচারক ১১ জন আসামিকে যাবজ্জীবন সাজা এবং প্রত্যেককে ১ লাখ টাকা জরিমানা প্রদান করেন।
তিনি আরও জানান, মামলার পলাতক যাবজ্জীবন সাজাপ্রাপ্ত আসামিদের গ্রেপ্তার করার জন্য পুলিশ প্রশাসন কাজ করে যাচ্ছে। গ্রেপ্তার হওয়া ইয়াছিন দীর্ঘদিন ধরে বিভিন্ন এলাকায় আত্মগোপনে ছিল। তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করে বুধবার সকালে সিরাজগঞ্জ আদালতের মাধ্যমে জেল হাজতে পাঠানো হয়েছে।
