নিউ এলিফ্যান্ট রোডের বাটার মোড়ের সড়কদ্বীপে বটগাছটি শাখা বাড়িয়ে খানিকটা ছায়া বিছিয়ে দিয়েছে সড়কের ওপর। সেখানে রিকশা থামিয়ে চালক আবদুস সাত্তার কাঁধের গামছা দিয়ে ঘামে ভেজা মুখ মুছে নিতে নিতে হাঁপাচ্ছিলেন।
শুধু মুখমণ্ডলই নয়, সারা শরীরই তাঁর ঘামে জবজবে। বৃষ্টিতে ভিজলে যেমন হয়, আবদুস সাত্তারকে তেমনই দেখাচ্ছিল। মঙ্গলবার এলিফ্যান্ট রোডের দোকানপাট বন্ধ। সে কারণে এই সড়কে যানবাহনের ভিড়বাট্টা একটু কম। আবদুস সাত্তার পুরানা পল্টন থেকে যাত্রী নিয়ে কাঁটাবন মোড়ে নামিয়ে দিয়ে এলিফ্যান্ট রোড পর্যন্ত এসে থেমে গেছেন। তিনি বললেন, ‘আর পারতাছি না। কলিজায় টান লাগতাছে। একটু না জিরাইলে অইব না।’ তাঁর বয়স ৬৮ বছর। বেলা তখন পৌনে একটা। মাথার ওপর থেকে সূর্য আগুনের হলকার মতো গনগনে রোদ ঢেলে চলেছে অকৃপণভাবে। তীব্র দহনে যেন পুড়ে যাচ্ছে চরাচর। প্রবীণ রিকশাচালক সাত্তার খানিক দম নিয়ে রিকশার যাত্রীর আসন নিচে নামালেন। সেখান থেকে দুই লিটারের একটি প্লাস্টিকের পানির বোতল বের করে আঁজলায় ভরে খানিকটা মুখে ছিটিয়ে নিলেন। তারপর চুমুক দিলেন তেষ্টা মেটাতে। তিনি থাকেন শাহজাহানপুরে। বলছিলেন, ‘এই রোইদ্যে মানুষ হইয়া মানুষ টানি, খুবই কষ্টের কাজ। না কইরাও উপায় নাই।’
