তানাজ কুয়েতপ্রবাসী মোকাদ্দেসুর রহমান তোরাব ও মনিরা বেগম দম্পতির মেয়ে। মোকাদ্দেসুর কয়েক মাস হলো দেশে এসেছেন। তাঁদের গ্রামের বাড়ি শেরপুরের শ্রীবরদী উপজেলার চরশিমুলচড়া গ্রামে। তবে বর্তমানে তাঁর পরিবার শেরপুর শহরের নওহাটা এলাকার বাড়িতে বসবাস করে। এই দম্পতির তিন মেয়ে ও এক ছেলের মধ্যে সবার বড় তানাজ। দ্বিতীয় সন্তান রিতাজ (১৩) শেরপুর সরকারি বালিকা উচ্চবিদ্যালয়ে সপ্তম শ্রেণিতে পড়ছে। তৃতীয় সন্তান লিজা (৯) একটি মাদ্রাসায় তৃতীয় শ্রেণিতে পড়ছে। সবার ছোট আহনাফ আনাছ (২) বড় বোন তানাজের সঙ্গেই চলে গেছে না ফেরার দেশে।
পরিবারের সদস্যরা জানান, গত ৩১ মার্চ ময়মনসিংহের তারাকান্দায় মাইক্রোবাস ও একটি যাত্রীবাহী বাসের মুখোমুখি সংঘর্ষে মারা যায় তানাজ ও আনাছ। একই দুর্ঘটনায় তাদের মা–বাবা মোকাদ্দেসুর রহমান, মনিরা বেগমসহ আরও কয়েকজন আহত হন।
